The Austrian GP is hosted in the famous Red Bull Ring Circuit. The most beautiful circuit of all, surrounded by beautiful hills and greenery everywhere. The circuit runs over 4.318KM with 71 laps to complete. The last lap record was set by Carlos Sainz with 1.05.619 in 2020. Last year podium was taken up by P1 Bottas, P2 Leclerc and P3 Lando Norris who took his maiden podium in Austria.
And it's lights out and away we go. Verstappen takes the lead followed by Norris and Perez. As all cars go through turn 3 there is a yellow flag on the starting lap.
Ocon was sandwiched between a Haas and Giovanazzi. Ocon chipped his front right tire aster the contact and sadly that was the end of Ocon's race. Giovanazzi went straight to the pits for a fresh set of tires.
Yellow Flag Re-start
Lap 3, safety car into the pitlane and green flag for the race restart. Max still leading followed by Norris and Perez. Bottas and Lewis up one place as the intense battle to P2 goes on between Norris and Perez.
As all cars go through turn 4, Perez tries to go inside of Norris but ends up going into the gravel and goes down to 10th place. Norris ended up getting a 5 seconds penalty with -2 penalty points.
As the race goes on at full speed, Giovanazzi gets a 5-second penalty for a safety car
overtake during lap 2. With Perez in P10, Lewis on Norris to claim that P2 spot. Meanwhile, Yuki was handed a 5 second time penalty for crossing the white line in the pit entry. Daniel Ricciardo is up 5 places on lap 18, amazing pace.
Lewis finally overtakes Norris in lap 20 to claim that P2 spot and Norris goes down to P3. Lando goes into the pits but has to wait 5 seconds before leaving the stop. As he comes out of the put exit, Bottas takes over P3 and Lando is pushed down to P4.
Lap 41, Perez and Leclerc on an intense battle. Leclerc tries to go on the inside of Perez but ends up in the gravel.
A similar incident took place with Perez and Leclerc in the following lap for which Perez picked up another 5 seconds time penalty. Daniel up to P6. Nikita was showed a black and white flag for exceeding track limits. Bottas was told to race Lewis since he picked up some floor damage to defend Lando and both the Mercedes swap places in Lap 53.
Mercedes running 2-3 podium places. It was a closed win for them. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll was given a 5 second time penalty for speeding in the pitlane. Yuki ends up getting a second 5 second time penalty for crossing the Whiteline in the pit entry again. The Black and white flag was shown to Kimi for exceeding the track limits.
The battle to the last podium place goes on between Lewis and Lando. Lando goes on the inside of Lewis and gets that podium place and pushing Lewis down to P4.
Alonso and Russell battle for the last point finish. It was a very crucial time for the Williams driver to get the team's first points.
But Alonso was not letting him go free. By Lap 68, Alonso overtakes Russell and is up to 10th place. Sainz overtakes Ricciardo and moves up to 6th place.
As the chequered flag is waved. The is a yellow flag in sector two. Kimi and Vettel had a crash, Kimi took Vettel out in the final sector and both ended up going into the gravel.
Max wins the Austrian Grand Prix followed by Bottas and Norris in 3rd place. Last year Lando took his maiden podium in the same place he wins it again.
It was a great day for McLaren as Lando wins his 3rd win of this season, Daniel in P7, 3rd in constructors and Lando was voted the driver of the day.
Although the race was over and everyone went back into the pits, stewards called in Kimi, Vettel, Russell, Mazeoin, Latifi, Perez, Ricciardo, Leclerc, Gasly, Giovinazzi and Sainz to the control room for not following the double yellow flag waved at them for final sector incident. It's a lot of penalties, so I'll beak it down on for you.
